About James

James W. Fortune is an experienced landscape and commercial/editorial photographer, based in the North East of England, with 20 years of photographic practice and six years of formal education.

James first gained an interest in photography at the age of thirteen, thanks to his first camera phone, which he used to record life BMXing around the local area with his friends, paired with a keen eye for observing the world around him. What started as something that was simply a fun method of documentation, quickly developed into a more focused interest when his Grandfather gave him his Pentax MX. A lot has changed since those early days, but James’ passion for the medium has not.

A keen art student from a young age, he has practised a variety of different mediums, from paint, to pencil, to copper work and beyond. He went on to study photography through College and University, completing his BA Hons in 2012 at Edinburgh Napier University and eventually turning full time pro in 2017.

James’ passion for landscape and seascape photography has been a dominant force throughout his journey, having grown up next to the coast. Pairing this passion with degree level education has resulted in a strong understanding of many advanced technical aspects of photography, from project to concept to print.

This approach is incorporated into his commercial work, where his extensive experience behind the lens helps create impactful visuals with a sincere and relatable narrative. His dedication to his own personal development has gained him a strong understanding of multiple disciplines, which has helped forge a reputation of reliability, creativity and integrity, while delivering exceptional results.
